Cebu governor orders evacuation of high-risk areas as 'Ramon' nears


Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia on Tuesday ordered residents in high-risk areas to evacuate as tropical depression "Ramon" threatens to lash through the central Philippine province. She convened the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council in Cebu to assess the impact of "Ramon" on the province, Garcia said. "Kailangan i-evacuate ang high-risk areas..." Garcia said in an interview on radio dzBB, noting she also ordered local officials to “be ready with their equipment kung sakaling may landslides." Initial reports have it that parts of Camotes Island — placed under Storm Signal No. 1 before noon Tuesday — will get flooded, with northern Cebu and Bantayan Island also likely to bear the impact of the incoming storm, according to the governor. Eighteen areas in the Visayas and Mindanao were placed under Signal No. 1 at 11 a.m. as "Ramon" nears the Visayas-Mindanao area, according to the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
