'Ramon' now a storm; 6 areas under Signal 2 - PAGASA


Six areas in the Visayas and Mindanao were placed under Storm Signal No. 2 as tropical cyclone "Ramon" intensified into a tropical storm on Tuesday afternoon. The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said 17 other areas in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao were under Storm Signal No. 1. "Nariyan ang possibility na lalakas pa (si 'Ramon') bago tumama bukas ng umaga. Sa ngayon, nakikita natin malapit na siya sa coastline ng northeastern Mindanao at Eastern Visayas," PAGASA forecaster Rene Paciente said at a press conference, parts of which were aired on radio dzBB.

PAGASA defines a tropical storm as a "moderate tropical cyclone with maximum wind speed of 64 to 118 kilometers per hour (kph) and with closed isobars." PAGASA estimated Ramon to bring rainfall of 10 to 30 millimeters per hour (moderate to heavy) within the 400-kilometer (km) diameter of the storm. The areas under Storm Signal No. 2 are:

  • Camiguin Island PAGASA reminded residents in low-lying and mountainous areas under storm signals to be alert against possible flash floods, landslides and storm surges. It added that said those living in coastal areas should be alerted against big waves or storm surges. Meanwhile, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center's latest update indicated that "Ramon" would pass through Northeastern Mindanao, Visayas and Southern Luzon A report of radio dzBB's Denver Trinidad quoted Paciente as saying some areas in Agusan del Sur are now experiencing flash floods. PAGASA said "Ramon" was estimated at 180 km east northeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur as of 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, packing maximum sustained winds of 65 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 80 kph. On its 5:00 p.m. advisory,PAGASA said "Ramon" is forecast to move northwest at 17 kph and will prevail over Southern Leyte or 70 km north of Maasin, Southern Leyte by Wednesday afternoon. By Thursday afternoon, it is expected to be in the vicinity of Bongabong, Oriental Mindoro. By Friday afternoon, it is expected to be 200 km west of Iba, Zambales. — RSJ/VVP, GMA News
