'Ramon' prompts class suspension up to high school in Cebu

Bad weather conditions brought by Tropical Storm Ramon (Banyan) prompted education officials in Cebu to suspend classes up to the high school level for Wednesday. The Department of Education in Cebu said the suspension applied to public schools in the entire province, radio dzBB's Cebu affiliate reported. Earlier this week, some flood-hit areas of Mandaue City in the province had been placed under a state of calamity. Northern Cebu and Bohol were placed under Storm Signal No. 2 while the rest of Cebu and Siquijor Island were placed under Storm Signal No. 1 due to Ramon, according to the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration. Meanwhile, the DepEd reminded school officials they "have the discretion to suspend classes when necessary even without storm signals." The DepEd supervises classes in the preschool, elementary and high school levels. Make-up classes to start in some Bulacan areas In Central Luzon, the DepEd is eyeing make-up classes starting this weekend in flood-hit areas in Bulacan, radio dzBB's Glen Juego reported. The report said many schools in the towns of Calumpit and Hagonoy still could not hold classes because the schools were being used as evacuation centers. Other schools in the flood-hit areas were still flooded, the report added. The report said the semestral break has been canceled in these flood-hit areas to let the students catch up. — RSJ, GMA News
