LRTA: More than 13,000 senior citizens avail of free LRT ride


More than 13,000 senior citizens in Metro Manila availed of the free ride of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) Lines 1 and 2 on October 7 as part of the celebration of "Elderly Filipino Week." The LRT Administration (LRTA) the free LRT rides capped the commemoration of Elderly Filipino Week from October 1 to 7. The LRT Line 1 links Baclaran in southern Metro Manila to Roosevelt in Quezon City while the LRT Line 2 links Recto in Manila to Santolan in Marikina City. Over radio dzBB on Wednesday, LRTA spokesman Hernando Cabrera said 10,000 took the LRT-1 while more than 3,000 took the LRT-2 on October 7. While the free rides were only for that day, the LRTA said senior citizens are still entitled to other benefits such as a 20 percent discount on fares and express lanes at ticket booths. Elderly Filipino Week is an annual event declared through Proclamation No. 470 issued by former President Fidel Ramos.
