Report: Twitter loses VP for engineering

Micro-blogging site Twitter has lost a key official as its vice president of engineering, Mike Abbott, left the company to do more investing, a tech site reported. All Things Digital cited sources close to the situation as saying the move had been "brewing for a while" and "happened several days ago." "Twitter does not have a replacement as yet, sources said. A Twitter spokesman declined comment," the AllThingsD report said. It described Abbott as a high-profile hire for Twitter a little over a year ago from Palm, where he served as head of its software and services. While at Palm, Abbott was in charge of the webOS platform. He was brought in to bring a level of discipline and reliability to the Twitter communications platform and service, plagued at the time by persistent outages that made the Fail Whale infamous. Abbott has since addressed the problem, and Twitter has grown significantly. Twitter now has 230 million tweets per day, Abbott said in a recent interview. — RSJ, GMA News
