Samsung Android 'launch' to push through Oct 19

After being postponed in deference to the death of Apple Inc. co-founder and former CEO Steve Jobs, the joint Android press event of Google and Samsung will push through on October 19 in Hong Kong. Tech site Mashable said media invites hinted at the launch of Ice Cream Sandwich, the next version of Google's Android operating system for mobile devices. "While the event doesn’t specifically mention the focus of the event will be 'Ice Cream Sandwich,' the next version of Google’s mobile OS, the invite itself features the iconic Android character in the form of an ice cream sandwich. You do the math," it said. Also, it said the Oct. 19 event will mark the debut of Samsung's Nexus Prime, the first smartphone to run the new Google OS. Mashable said the Nexus Prime reportedly contains a dual-core 1.2 to 1.5 GHz processor, 1GB of RAM and 4G LTE. It also noted the event corresponds with the AllThingsD‘s AsiaD Conference, which kicks off not long after the Google-Samsung press conference. Samsung and Google initially decided to postpone the new product at CTIA Fall. The event was initially scheduled Oct. 11. "We agree that it is just not the right time to announce a new product. New date and venue will be shortly announced," tech site Engadget earlier quoted the companies as saying in a statement . Engadget also quoted a Google spokesperson who said the event was canceled out of respect for Apple co-founder and former CEO Steve Jobs' passing. "We believe this is not the right time to announce a new product as the world expresses tribute to Steve Jobs's passing," the spokesperson said. An article on PC World said the new release of Android is highly anticipated because it is expected to tie the smartphone and tablet versions together. Presently, Android has a Gingerbread flavor for smartphones and a Honeycomb flavor for tablets. — TJD, GMA News
