'Limited' jailbreak out for iOS5

Less than a week after it was released, iOS5, Apple Inc.'s newest operating system for mobile devices, can now be jailbroken. But while the Redsn0w version 0.9.9b5 allows a tethered jailbreak, its author stressed this is only for developers to make sure their apps still work. "THIS JAILBREAK IS INTENDED ONLY FOR DEVELOPERS OF JAILBROKEN APPS! There are just too many broken components (Apple’s official apps, 3rd-party App Store apps, Cydia apps, MobileSubstrate apps, etc) for this to be useful to anyone but those truly looking to fix bugs in their iOS 5 jailbroken apps. (Seriously!)," Redsn0w said in a blog post. Redsn0w added unlockers and those preserving their unlockable basebands should similarly stay away from this as they may lose their unlockable baseband. While the jailbreak will work on almost all iOS devices, it cannot work yet on the iPad 2 and the newly released iPhone 4S. "It’s still a tethered jailbreak on all except the old-bootrom iPhone3GS, and it doesn’t apply to iPad2 or the upcoming iPhone4S," Redsn0w added. Apple released iOS 5 earlier this week for its devices ranging from the iPhone to the iPad and iPod Touch. But the new operating system got off to a stumbling start of sorts as many users upgrading to iOS 5 complained of error messages that interrupted the upgrade process. One particular message —"Error 3200"— became a worldwide trending topic on Twitter. "The issue is reportedly related to Apple’s servers, which are unable to keep up with the massive influx of traffic. The fix? A lot of people suggest to just keep trying, though some of them are saying it took dozens of attempts before their request went through," TechCrunch said. — TJD, GMA News
