Fil-Am boxer Nonito Donaire speaks to youths in New Jersey


To celebrate Filipino-American history month in the United States, professional boxer Nonito Donaire, Jr. was scheduled to speak to high school youths on Monday (US time). Donaire is set to speak at the Jersey City Free Public Library, Greenville Branch Auditorium, 1841 John F. Kennedy Boulevard, Jersey City, New Jersey. Donaire is a Filipino-American who is also known as "The Flash." He is a three-division world champion, having won five titles in three different boxing weight classes. He was born in Talibon, Bohol, Philippines on November 16, 1982. He grew up in General Santos City, South Cotabato and went to the same school as Filipino boxing icon Rep. Manny Pacquiao, an eight-division world champion. Donaire ranks as one of the top five pound-for-pound boxers in the world and is considered to be one of the sports next great superstars. He is scheduled to fight Omar Narvaez on Saturday, October 22, 2011 in Madison Square Garden in New York City. While in the area, Donaire wants to reach out and share with the youth his personal story and inspire others to be proud of their Filipino heritage. Donaire's speaking engagement in New Jersey is a project of the Jersey City Free Public Library (Greenville Branch) and The Filipino School of New York and New Jersey. Founded in 2008, The Filipino School is a for-profit organization that promotes the teaching of Filipino language and arts, and the understanding of Filipino culture, values and tradition. - VVP, GMA News
