Suspected NPA rebel killed in NCotabato clash

A suspected communist rebel was killed while an Army junior officer was wounded following a predawn clash in the southern Philippine province of North Cotabato, the commanding officer of the Philippine Army said Thursday. In a text message to reporters, Lt. Gen. Arturo Ortiz said at 5:45 a.m., patrolling elements of the 10th Special Forces Company engaged an undetermined number of suspected New People's Army rebels at Sitio Upper Lumbo, Cabalantian in Arakan town. Apart from the body of the slain rebel, government troops also captured one insurgent. Likewise, three high-powered firearms were recovered. Ortiz said the wounded officer was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Incidentally, it is also in Arakan town where Italian priest Father Fausto Tentorio was gunned down on Monday. Both the rebels and the military have denied any hand in the killing of Tentorio. — RSJ, GMA News
