Mindanao bishop warns vs. controversial 'SPPX priests'

Davao Archbishop Fernando Capalla warned Catholics in Mindanao against dealing with priests from the controversial "Saint Pius X Society" (SPPX), which has questioned the authority of the pope on several occasions. Capalla said SPPX priests were validly ordained but they do not have legal or canonical status in the Philippine Church. According to a report of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), the SSPX, organized by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre in 1969, rejected modern rites of the liturgy, some portions of the Vatican II documents and questioned papal authority on several occasions. In 1988, Lefebvre consecrated four bishops against the will of then Pope John Paul II. The Vatican declared his move “a schismatic act" and the Pope excommunicated the four bishops in 1991. Pope Benedict XVI eventually lifted the excommunication in December 2008, hoping to restore “full communion with the Church" with the SSPX. - VVP, GMA News
