Gmail, Google's free Web-based email, is getting another facelift with a cleaner interface and many new features, an enthusiast site reported. The Google Operating System blog said the new look is based mainly on Gmail's relatively new Preview theme, but there are also many "other" changes. Among the new features it listed are:
an action bar that uses icons instead of text labels a completely new interface for conversations profile pictures next to contacts a flexible layout that adapts to any window size, display density options like in Google Docs resizable chat/labels sections new high-definition themes an updated search box that includes advanced options. It also noted an arrow next to "Mail," with the links to Google Contacts and Google Tasks now missing. "Maybe you'll be able to use the arrow to switch to other Google services," it speculated. Pulled video A separate article on PC World noted the Google Operating System blog posted a link to what appeared to be a Google video clip showing the new Gmail interface. "The video first appeared on Google's YouTube Channel, but has since been marked 'private,' and is inaccessible to the unwashed masses," it said. It added it is unclear when Google will officially unveil Gmail's new and improved UI. For its part, tech site CNET said a Google representative confirmed the video's authenticity but declined to provide further details. "Oops, you weren't supposed to see that. Stay tuned, we'll be sharing more info on Gmail's new look soon," it quoted Google representative Andrea Freund as saying in an interview. Meanwhile, CNET said Google has also updated Gmail themes for user's windows with high-resolution images such as sunsets, grass, and stones. It said the changes will be rolled out incrementally over the next few months. — RSJ, GMA News
