PHL govt wishes lasting peace, stability for 'new Libya'

With the death of Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi, the Philippine government on Friday wished "new Libya" peace and stability as it transitions into a democratic society. "We fervently hope that the people of Libya will now find a better way forward from more than four decades of autocratic rule. We wish the Libyan people the best as they transition to a democratic, just and equitable society," deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte told reporters in a text message on Friday. Officials of the National Transitional Council had earlier announced that Gaddafi was killed in the Libyan city of Sirte on Thursday. "The Philippines congratulates the Libyan people for their latest victory and the total liberation of Libya," the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said in a separate statement on Friday. But aside from extending its congratulations, the DFA said it hopes that Gaddafi's death will lead to the immediate restoration of normalcy and peace throughout the foreign country. "The Philippines hopes that the Libyan peoples' aspiration for democracy will be fully realized and that it will yield peace, stability, and prosperity for the country," it said. It likewise thanked the Libyan people for keeping Filipinos working and living in their country safe throughout the conflict. "Many (Filipinos still) hope to return, work and contribute to the reconstruction and rebuilding of the new Libya," it said. — with Kimberly Jane Tan/RSJ GMA News
