Fil-Korean actress Jasmine Lee's movie premieres in Busan


"Wandeukee (Punch)," the movie where Filipino-Korean actress Jasmine Lee is starring, recently premiered in Korea, the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said. A crowd of about 4,000 attended the premiere earlier this month at the Open Theater of the Busan Cinema Center. Lee, a Seoul-based multicultural family advocate, appeared as a Filipina mother of the lead character played by Hallyu star Yoo Ah-In. Yoo has appeared in several movies and dramas. His breakout role came last year when he took the role of the heroic "Moon Jae-shin" in the highly popular Korean drama series "Sungkyunkwan Scandal." In "Wandeukee," Yoo stars as "Yoo Won-deuk," a poor and troubled student born to a Korean father and a Filipino mother. Lee takes the role of the Filipino mother. However, in the novel written by Kim Ryeo-Ryeong where the movie is based, Lee's character was Vietnamese. "Wandeukee" tells the story of a teacher who became Yoo's trainer of the troubled youth discovered his talent in boxing. Philippine Ambassador to Korea Luis Cruz lauded the Filipino artists in the festival, saying they proved anew the Philippines is a home to world-class talents. "The outstanding recognition achieved by the Filipino artists in the 2011 Busan International Film Festival once again proved that the Philippines is a home to world-class talents," he said. The five Filipino entries to the festival included "Nino," a film by Loy Arcenas, which won the top prize at the New Currents Section that showcased 13 directorial debut films from 12 Asian countries.
