Six Pinoys rescued from Thai floods

Six Filipinos were rescued from floods in the Nonthaburi area in Thailand before noon on Monday, the Philippine embassy there said. In an update posted on its website, the embassy said the rescue occurred at 10:00 a.m. as its team picked up the Filipinos had to wade through waist-deep floods. "The six, who waded through waist-deep floodwaters to get to a dry place where the Evacuation Team picked them up, are now temporarily housed at the Embassy," it said . The embassy said Thailand's Flood Relief Operations Center (FROC) warned that another high tide will likely to take place between October 28 and 30 and that flooding might persist for four to six weeks in many areas. "In view of this, our kababayans who are in areas at risk of flooding are advised to remain alert and to contact the Embassy immediately for any emergency," the embassy said. As of October 23, the embassy has assisted at least 120 Filipinos displaced by the flooding in Thailand. Most of them are now staying temporarily with friends and or relatives elsewhere in Bangkok, while some are staying in hotels, the embassy said. "The majority of these Filipinos received relief assistance from donations given by various Filipino community organizations and individuals," it added The embassy noted that the number of requests for either evacuation or relief assistance from Filipinos affected by the floods has declined. "In a way, this is a good sign. It can mean the crisis is leveling off," it said. - VVP, GMA News
