Report: iPad 3 due in march with smaller dock?

Apple Inc. may release its highly anticipated iPad 3 tablet sometime in March 2012, but reportedly with a smaller dock connector that could cause some compatibility problems with existing Apple devices. Tech site Macotakara cited a "reliable Asian source" that said Apple is rushing to release the third-generation iPad soonest. "(The) new iPad seems to have (a) re-designed dock connector. (The dock's) 30-pins and electricity specification will not be changed, but (the) shape will be smaller than the current 'iPad dock connector,' which (was) released April 2003," it said. Such a new dock connector design may cause compatibility problem with current dock connecting products, it added. Also, it said its source claimed the new iPad will have the same screen size as the iPad 2. It noted one reason for the rush may be the holidays - the Chinese New Year falls on Jan. 23, 2012. Macotakara cited another source that said the new iPad has black and white case models. A separate article on PC Magazine cited earlier reports by All Things Digital that Apple is ready to kick off production on the iPad 3, based on evidence in supply chains such as increased iPad orders. But it also raised the possibility the iPad may come cheaper. "It’s also been rumored that the iPad 3 will be lighter and thinner. But how will it be priced, especially now that Amazon has announced the highly-anticipated Kindle Fire tablet? Priced at $199, it’s been widely speculated that the 7-inch tablet will be the first device to give the iPad a run for its money," PC Mag said. Meanwhile, tech site CNET said the Linley Group, a chip consulting firm, believes Apple will outfit the next iPad with an A6 processor, which could potentially push the launch back until next June or later. — RSJ, GMA News
