IOM setting up 'one-stop centers' in PHL for migrants

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is establishing One-Stop Resource Centers (OSRCs) in various areas in the Philippines to help migrants and their families. In a statement issued on Tuesday, the IOM said the centers will provide:

  • advice on safe and legal migration;
  • local opportunities for migrant reintegration;
  • trainings on savings, investment and entrepreneurship; financial literacy trainings;
  • case management services;
  • psychosocial counseling, and
  • paralegal services. The centers will be set up in Masbate, Antique, Maguindanao, and Agusan del Sur. The IOM said it expects the centers to be up and running by the first half of 2012. Each OSRC will have a coordinating committee composed of four sub-committees:
  • Information Education, Research, Networking & Advocacy;
  • Psychosocial Services;
  • Economic, Savings & Investment Program, and
  • Migration & Development Initiatives. The setting up of OSRCs is part of the Joint Programme on Youth, Employment and Migration under the United Nations Millennium Development Goals Fund. The OSRCs will be multi-stakeholder centers, led by the provincial governments, that will also provide national government agencies such as the Philippine Overseas Employment Agency (POEA) and the Overseas Workers’ Welfare Association (OWWA). - VVP, GMA News
