POEA: Deployment ban in Libya stays

The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) said the ban on the deployment of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) to Libya stays. POEA administrator Carlos Cao, Jr., said an interagency committee decided in a meeting on Tuesday to retain the ban on sending OFWs to Libya, which is under a new leadership following the fall and eventual death of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. “During the (interagency) meeting we decided to maintain the ban until DFA (Department of Foreign Affairs) finishes its assessment and submits its recommendation to the Office of the President," Cao said. He explained that the DFA will assess the security situation in Libya. Aside from the POEA and the DFA, the other members of the committee are the Department of Labor and Employment (DoLE), POEA, Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), and the Commission of Filipinos Overseas (CFO). Meanwhile, the POEA warned that recruitment agencies sending OFWs would Libya face charges. “We will file criminal and administrative charges against companies, if it will be proven that they have violated the deployment ban," he said. - VVP, GMA News
