MMDA sets up smoking areas on EDSA, Commonwealth

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority on Wednesday started putting up cigarette bins along major thoroughfares where smokers can smoke and throw their cigarette butts. At least 29 of the cigarette bins — 55-gallon drums cut in half and filled with sand — were placed along Epifanio delos Santos Avenue (EDSA), the MMDA said. "The bins will be placed strategically at designated areas, about ten meters away from bus loading/ unloading bays," it said in a news release. The cigarette bins along EDSA are located at:

  • Baclaran
  • Pasay
  • Magallanes
  • Ayala
  • Buendia
  • Estrella
  • Guadalupe
  • Megamall
  • Santolan
  • Cubao
  • Kamuning
  • Quezon Avenue
  • Oliveros
  • Muñoz
  • Monumento. On the other hand, 13 more bins will be placed along Commonwealth Avenue, particularly at:
  • Philcoa
  • UP University Avenue
  • Diliman Prep
  • Ever Gotesco
  • IBP Road
  • St. Peter's Church
  • Ayala Technohub
  • Central Avenue
  • Don Antonio The MMDA said this is in line with the Tobacco Regulation Act that mandates administrators of places not covered by the absolute smoking ban to designate smoking areas. MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino appealed to the public not to move, dislodge, or throw any other kind of trash into the bins. Tolentino noted that smoking is prohibited in waiting sheds so smokers must go to the nearest cigarette bin where they could smoke. The MMDA said its Health, Public Safety, and Environmental Protection Office is tasked to place the cigarette bins to ensure that cleanliness is maintained at the designated smoking areas. - KBK, GMA News
