Haunted airports, coffins for the living in southern PHL?

If you're looking for something a bit stranger this Halloween, take a trip down southern Philippines. A report of Cedric Castillo on GMA News TV's "State of the Nation" (SONA) on Wednesday said the once bustling Sasa airport in Davao City is now abandoned and the few families that have made it their home aren't its only occupants. Melita Maraganas, who has been living in the airport with her children for a year, said "Bubuksan ko na sana ang pinto, may sumitsit sa akin. Akala ko tunog lang ng pintuan tapos ilang beses nailit 'yun. Iba ang pakiramdam ko, tumayo na ang balahibo ko." Rosemarie Rios, whose husband guards the airport, said, "Nakakarinig kami ng mga pusa tapos bata na umiiyak, tapos wala naman kaming nakita na bata o ano. Pagkatapos ng pag-iyak ng bata, iyak ng nanay naman ang narinig namin na humahagulgol." The residents believe the strange sounds are related to the airport bombing in March 2003 where 21 people died.

Coffin-maker Eleazar Tupas Jr. makes personalized coffins for the deceased. However, he makes quirky coffins for the living, like the tumba-tumba kabaong and the sofa coffin. "Sa panahon ngayon, gusto ng mga tao na personalize ang kanilang kabaong para maganda for the last time. Makita ng mga naiwan na naiiba ang kanilang lalagyan," said Tupas, who has been in the business for five years. There is also a giant coffin-shaped speaker and a four poster coffin bed. The idea may seem disturbing but the coffin bed looks so comfortable, you may not want to wake up...at least not too soon. - with Carmela Lapeña, VVP, GMA News
