Planking does not impress PNoy

President Benigno Aquino III is not a fan of planking, especially when it is used in protest actions. In his speech during the awarding of the Ten Accomplished Youth Organizations (TAYO) on Thursday, Aquino said planking — where a person lies on his stomach and stays as stiff as a wood — does not solve anything, especially food shortage. “Nagsasalu-salo tayo ngayon upang kilalanin ang mga organisasyon ng mga kabataang tunay na nag-aalay ng kanilang oras, talino, at talento upang tugunan ang mga pambansang suliranin," Aquino said. “Sila ang mga grupong mulat na hindi planking ang solusyon sa kakulangan sa pagkain. Sila ay responsable, may pakialam sa kanilang kinabibilangang pamayanan, at mulat sa tungkuling dapat nilang gampanan sa kanilang pamilya at sa bayan," he added, in an apparent potshot at militant groups who made planking part of their protest actions. A bill has been filed at the House of Representatives seeking against planking during street protests. Quezon City Rep. Winston Castelo filed the bill last September after some youth protesters lay face down on España Boulevard in Manila to support a transport strike. This year’s 10 awardees were:

  • Industrial Engineering Council;

PNoy for the youth In his speech, Aquino said his administration is working hard to help the Filipino youth achieve their full potential. He said the Department of Labor and Employment, in cooperation with the private sector, has provided a program that enables the underprivileged high school graduates to pursue tertiary education through the Youth Education-Youth Employability Project. For those who have interest in entrepreneurship, Aquino said the government is providing capital assistance through the Youth Entrepreneurship Support Project. Aquino said that the P238.8-billion proposed budget for education in 2012 – an increase of P30 billion from this year – was part of his administration’s reform agenda. There is also the Government Assistance to Students and Teachers in Private Education that aims to decongest the students in public schools and the P700 million allotted for the Training for Work Scholarship Program of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority. The search for TAYO aims to recognize, reward, and encourage the youth organizations all over the country with programs and projects that help their communities. The search also encourages the selection of projects that can be replicated by youth organizations in other parts of the country. — Amita O. Legaspi/KBK, GMA News
