Former senator Ninoy Aquino, the president’s father, was assassinated upon his arrival at the Manila International Airport on Aug. 21, 1983. The airport now bears his name. The 1983 assassination triggered a series of protest actions that culminated in a bloodless revolt that ousted then president Ferdinand Marcos from power and installed his widow Cory to the presidency in 1986. Mrs. Aquino died on Aug. 1, 2009 after a battle with cancer. Her death triggered an outpouring of sympathy that led their son, then a senator, to run in the 2010 presidential elections. — LBG, GMA News
