Pinoys place candles, flowers at Ninoy, Cory tombs
Filipinos remembered the late former President Corazon "Cory" Aquino and her husband, slain former Sen. Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr., on Undas (All Saintsâ and All Soulsâ Days) as they placed flowers and candles near their tombs a the Manila Memorial Park in Parañaque City over the weekend. As of early Sunday morning, many Filipinos visited the tombs of the Aquino couple, radio dzBBâs Manny Vargas reported. Security was tight at the Parañaque memorial park, with guards inspecting the items brought in by visitors. Incumbent President Benigno Aquino III, the Aquinosâ son, is expected to visit his parentsâ graves on Monday. Former senator Ninoy Aquino, the presidentâs father, was assassinated upon his arrival at the Manila International Airport on Aug. 21, 1983. The airport now bears his name. The 1983 assassination triggered a series of protest actions that culminated in a bloodless revolt that ousted then president Ferdinand Marcos from power and installed his widow Cory to the presidency in 1986. Mrs. Aquino died on Aug. 1, 2009 after a battle with cancer. Her death triggered an outpouring of sympathy that led their son, then a senator, to run in the 2010 presidential elections. â LBG, GMA News
