Weather: Rain looms on parts of PHL on eve of All Saints’ Day

Rain showers and thunderstorms loom over parts of the country on the eve of All Saints’ Day due to a shallow low-pressure area affecting Mindanao and a wind convergence affecting some parts of Luzon, state weather forecasters said Monday. But Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration forecaster Ben Oris said the SLPA is not likely to intensify into a cyclone at this time. "Ito ay maliit ang tsansa [na] maging bagyo, shallow pa ito. Ito ay nasasagap sa ITCZ, napapaloob siya (It has a slim chance of becoming a cyclone. It is still shallow, and embedded in an inter-tropical convergence zone)," Oris said in an interview on dzBB radio. Should the SLPA become a cyclone, it would be codenamed “Sendong." Oris also said Metro Manila may experience isolated rain showers and thunderstorms especially in the afternoon or evening on Monday and Tuesday. PAGASA said the SLPA was estiomated at 560 km east of Mindanao as of 2 a.m., embedded along the ITCZ affecting Visayas and Mindanao. It added a wind convergence is affecting northern and eastern Luzon. "Northern and eastern Luzon, the Visayas and Mindanao will experience mostly cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms. The rest of the country will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms mostly in the afternoon or evening," PAGASA said in its 5 a.m. bulletin. Moderate to strong winds blowing from the northeast and east will prevail over Luzon and its coastal waters will be moderate to rough, it added. Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate coming from the east to northeast with slight to moderate seas. Meanwhile, PAGASA said strong to gale force winds associated with the surge of the northeasterly surface windflow may affect the seaboards of northern Luzon and the western seaboard of Central Luzon. — RSJ, GMA News
