PHL takes part in intl health conference


The Philippines was represented in a recent international health conference in Brazil that tackled the social determinants of health, the Philippine embassy there reported. According to the embassy, some 1,000 delegates representing 125 United Nations member states attended the World Conference on Social Determinants of Health in Rio de Janeiro from October 19 to 21. “It brought together World Health Organization Member States, civil society and academia to discuss and exchange experiences in reducing health inequities through action on social determinants of health and well-being," the embassy said in a report to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA). The conference, convened by the WHO and hosted by Brazil, is one of the largest meetings in WHO´s history since the International Conference on Primary Health Care in Alma Ata, Kazakhstan in 1978. Those who represented the Philippines in the meet were:

  • Dr. Ramon Lorenzo Rosa Guinto, Doctor of Medicine of the University of the Philippines, Manila, representing the International Federation of Medical Students; and
  • Dr. Edelina de la Paz, Professor of Community Medicine and head of the People's Health Movement. Philippine ambassador to Brazil Eva Betita also took part in the conference. - VVP, GMA News
