Manila police stay put at cemeteries on Nov. 2

While November 2 is a regular working day, police said Tuesday night they will maintain their watch over major cemeteries in Manila. Manila Police District chief Senior Superintendent Alex Gutierrez said they still expect up to 20,000 visitors to go to the North Cemetery on Wednesday. "Inaasahan pa natin bukas ang hindi nakadalaw ngayon, sigurado pupunta bukas yan (We expect those whocould not visit the cemetery today to go on Wednesday)," he said in an interview on dzBB radio Tuesday night. Citing figures from last year, he said some 10,000 to 20,000 people visited the Manila North Cemetery on November 2. Gutierrez inspected the North Cemetery grounds Tuesday night, where he said the conduct of Undas (All Saints' Day) was peaceful and orderly. An updated report by dzBB's Cecilia Villarosa quoted Gutierrez as saying there were about 200,000 people still at the cemetery as of 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. "At malamang bukas, katulad ng isang taon aabot ng 10,000 to 20,000 ang aabot siguro (We expect that like last year, the number of visitors on November 2 will reach 10,000 to 20,000)," he said. — ELR, GMA News
