Ligot couple posts bail for tax evasion cases

Former military comptroller Jacinto Ligot and his wife, Erlinda, on Wednesday posted a P160,000 bail for the four tax evasion cases they are currently facing before the Court of Tax Appeals (CTA). The Ligot couple, who are subject of manhunt operations, surfaced to post bail at the CTA days after the court found probable cause to arrest them for alleged violation of the National Internal Revenue Code for attempting to evade the payment of taxes from 2002 to 2004. Lawyer Emiliano Bantog, the couple’s counsel, said his clients were not trying to hide from authorities. He said the couple only learned of the arrest warrant last Friday through the media. Justice Secretary Leila de Lima ordered the manhunt against the couple after the CTA issued arrest orders against them last week. The Ligots were charged last Thursday with tax evasion for failing to report in their income tax return for 2003 other income amounting to: P87,918,732.36 (for Mr. Ligot) and P77,449,052.03 (Mrs. Ligot), or a total of over P165 million. Bantog also said that the Department of Justice need not bar the Ligots from leaving the country since the couple already showed willingness to face the charges filed against them by posting bail before the CTA. - Andreo C.
