Finally, Siri up and running on 'older' Apple devices

Less than a month after it debuted with Apple’s new iPhone 4S, the voice-activated assistant Siri has been hacked to run on “older" iPhone 4 and iPod Touch devices. Developers Steven Troughton-Smith and Chpwn have gotten Siri to talk to Apple’s servers on non-iPhone 4S devices, enthusiast site 9to5mac.com reported. “(The port) seems to be 100-percent functional. I’m working on the rough edges, but everything that works on the iPhone 4S seems to work here," Troughton-Smith said in an interview with 9to5mac.com. But he reiterated an iPhone 4S jailbreak was necessary to port the proper files for Siri’s servers to connect to an iPhone 4. He also said the port will require files and a validation token from the iPhone 4S that has to be pulled live from a jailbroken iPhone 4S in a “20-step process." On the other hand, he said porting the hack to an iPod Touch may not bring good results as the microphone on the iPod “is nowhere near as good as the iPhone" Troughton-Smith also said he would not take part in distributing the hack, saying he was interested only in the technology. 10 minutes to put everything together Troughton-Smith said that while he spent much time mapping the plan in his head, it took “no longer than 10 minutes" to put all the pieces in place and perform a first test on his iPhone 4. “And it was an instant success," he said. — TJD, GMA News
