Police: Charice dad's killer sends surrender feelers

The construction worker wanted for allegedly stabbing fatally the father of international singing sensation Charice Pempengco has sent surrender feelers, police said. Laguna police chief Senior Superintendent Gilbert Cruz said Angel Capili Jr., 35, said he was ready surrender but only on condition that he not be hurt, and that the investigation be fair. “Ang condition niya huwag siya masasaktan at maging maayos ang imbestigasyon na gagawin [His surrender would be on condition that he not be hurt, and that the probe be fair]," Cruz said in an interview aired early Thursday on dzBB radio.

On the other hand, San Pedro police head Superintendent Kirby Kraft said he has talked to Capili’s family, who he said promised to convince the suspect to surrender the next time he contacts them. But he said there is no definite time frame at this time on when they can get Capili to turn himself in. “His family promised to convince him to surrender because they are worried," Kraft said in an interview on dwIZ radio. On the other hand, Kraft said the police will grant the family’s request that Capili not be harmed should he decide to surrender. “Kahit sino pa man yan, lagi nating binibigayan ng proteksyon, meron silang karapatang pantao," he said. Capili is presently the subject of a manhunt after witnesses saw him fatally stab Ricky Pempengco, 43, before midnight Monday in San Pedro, Laguna. A P200,000 reward has been put up for information leading to Capili’s arrest. Kraft said that if Capili’s family informs police on his whereabouts, it may get a P200,000 reward. Pempengco’s death prompted Charice, who was scheduled to take part in a concert abroad, to rush home to the Philippines. The singer appealed for justice, even as police said they may file charges against Capili’s kin for trying to throw them off the scent. Chief Supt. Cruz, however, did not say who relayed Capili's "surrender message to the authorities, the report said. —MRT/LBG, GMA News
