Filipino art aficionados are looking forward to a rare treat this month — an exhibit of Spanish artist Pablo Picasso’s work in Manila. The Suite Vollard, a collection of 100 etchings using different techniques that were made in Paris from September 1930 to March 1937, will be featured at the Galeriya Banko Sentral of the Metropolitan Museum of Manila, said Met director Gerry Torres. The exhibit will run from November 10, 2011 until January 7, 2012. According to the exhibit notes from the museum, the prints first appeared in 1938 in two formats—on vellum paper at 50 copies per plate, and on Montval paper, which was produced in runs of 250 copies. The collection owned by Fundacion Mapfre, which will be shown at the Met, is one of the few that were kept in its entirety. The collection includes three portraits of art dealer and editor Ambroise Vollard, who commissioned the work. Other works in the suite are five plates called the Battle of Love (or Rape), 46 plates from The Sculptor’s Studio, four plates of Rembrandt, 15 plates of The Blind Minotaur and 27 varied compositions. "The Suite Vollard fully reflects the Picasso-type dialectic that fluctuates between order and violence, classicisms and disfiguration, serenity and chaos," according to the exhibit notes. "All of Picasso's influences can be seen in the series, his delusions of grandeur and his deep Mediterranean culture."

Picasso, who died in 1973, is one of the most well-known figures in 20th century art and is credited with popularizing the Cubist style. One of his most famous works is the painting entitled Guernica, which depicts the bombing of the town during the Spanish Civil War. - BC/YA, GMA News
