PAL, Cebu Pac among early local Google+ business adopters

Philippine air carriers Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific were among the first brands to set up pages on Google's upcoming social network Google+, shortly after Google opened it up to businesses.

PAL lost no time urging visitors to vote for the Puerto Princesa Underground River as one of the world's New Seven Wonders of Nature.

"Let it happen. Text PPUR to 2861," it said, along with a YouTube video of the underground river.

As of 3:45 p.m. Tuesday, PAL's Google+ page had 114 followers, with 12 having +1'd it.

For its part, Cebu Pacific featured its crew and planes in its first posts (https://plus.google.com/106488627881337043739/posts).

As of 4:55 p.m., Cebu Pacific's Google+ page already had 260 followers, while at least 38 Google+ users have +1'd it.

Google+, initially only for people, was opened to businesses and brands.

“For businesses and brands, Google+ pages help you connect with the customers and fans who love you. Not only can they recommend you with a +1, or add you to a circle to listen long-term. They can actually spend time with your team, face-to-face-to-face. All you need to do is start sharing, and you’ll soon find the super fans and loyal customers that want to say hello,” Vic Gundotra, Senior Vice President of Engineering, said in a blog post.

PAL already has a website (www.philippineairlines.com) and accounts on Twitter (www.twitter.com/flypal) and Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/flyPAL).

However, it is still dealing with protests from its ground crew union whose members were affected when it outsourced three non-core businesses effective Oct. 1.

Similarly, Cebu Pacific has its own website (http://www.cebupacificair.com), Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/cebupacificair), and Twitter account (http://twitter.com/#!/cebupacificair). — TJD, GMA News
