Apple mulls new LED backlight for new iPad's display

Apple Inc.'s next-generation iPad tablet may have a new light-emitting diode (LED) backlight solution to support high-definition (HD) displays, a tech site said.

Taiwan-based DigiTimes cited sources who said at least two alternative backlight solutions have been offered for Apple's consideration.

It quoted the sources as saying that with the next-generation iPads expected to support resolutions higher than 2048 by 1536 pixels, the single LED light bar used in the iPad 2 needs to be upgraded to maintain or strengthen the brightness of the panels.

DigiTimes said one of the proposed designs has a single-bar form factor but with two LED chips inside. The second proposed design has dual light bars.

At present, it quoted its sources as saying Apple is more inclined towards the dual light bars.

On the other hand, it said the manufacturers have solved issues related to heat dissipation and battery consumption for the dual light bar design.

A separate article on The Next Web cited reports that Apple had begun quality testing displays from Samsung and LG, the world’s two largest manufacturers of LCD panels.

The Next Web said its sources claimed both companies were asked to produce screens with better picture quality and density so Apple would be able to test the screens at one of its laboratories in China. — TJD, GMA News
