Adobe quits work on mobile Flash

Adobe is quitting work on its Flash software for mobile browsers in favor of the new HTML5 technology, a tech site reported Wednesday.

ZDNet cited "sources close to Adobe" who said they have been briefed on the company’s future development plans, that Adobe will no longer adopt Flash for mobile.

"Our future work with Flash on mobile devices will be focused on enabling Flash developers to package native apps with Adobe AIR for all the major app stores. We will no longer adapt Flash Player for mobile devices to new browser, OS version or device configurations," ZDNet's sources quoted Adobe as saying.

ZDNet also quoted Adobe as saying it will continue to support the current Android and PlayBook configurations with critical bug fixes and security updates.

It added Adobe is now focusing development efforts on:

- Applications for mobile
- Expressive content on the desktop (in and out of browser)
- Increasing investments in HTML5 in general

The full content and scope of the announcement is expected to be posted on the Adobe web site, ZDNet said. — TJD, GMA News
