Aquino condoles with Osmeñas in Bacolod over matriarch's death

President Benigno Simeon Aquino III on Thursday visited Bacolod City to condole with the prominent Osmeña family over the death of their matriarch. Aquino went to the wake of Lourdes de la Rama Osmeña at the Redemptorist Church in Bacolod City, Bacolod-based news site "Visayan Daily Star" reported on Friday. Mrs. Osmeña, 98, wife of former Senator Sergio Osmeña Jr., died at the Pablo O. Torre Memorial Hospital on Sunday. Aquino was welcomed by the surviving children of Mrs. Osmeña — Senator Sergio Osmeña III, Cebu Rep. Tomas Osmeña, and sisters Maria Victoria “Minnie" and Georgia. Another son, Stevie, went ahead to Cebu where Mrs. Osmena’s remains were to be brought on Friday. Her remains will be buried at their family mausoleum beside the remains of her husband on Saturday. The report said Aquino arrived at the Bacolod Silay Airport at about 2:30 p.m. Thursday with Transportation Secretary Manuel Roxas II and Energy Secretary Jose Rene Almendras. After visiting Mrs. Osmeña's wake, the president went straight back to the airport and returned to Manila. “It was a private visit and he wanted to keep it private, we could not overrule that. We are very touched that he took the time just to come here for this," Senator Osmeña told the Visayan Daily Star. One of the Osmeña daughters, Minnie, recounted that their mother always told them never to do anything to make them ashamed of their name. - VVP, GMA News
