Taekwondo's Manalo is 3rd PHL gold medalist

Maria Camille Manalo became the third Filipino gold medal winner in the taekwondo competitions of the 2011 Southeast Asian Games. Manalo easily ousted Vietnam's Thanh Thao Nguyen, 8-3, in the lightweight division. She drew a bye in the quarterfinals to assure herself of a bronze medal. She beat Vony Dian Permat of Indonesia to gain a spot in the finals. The Philippine taekwondo team so far collected four medals—two gold, one silver and one bronze. Marvin Gabriel Vidal won the silver in the poomsae individual event then teamed up with Shaneen Ched Sia to settle for the bronze in poomsae's mixed pair. Women power Manalo joins long jumper Marestella Torres and poomsae artists Rani Ann Ortega, Janice Lagman and Camille Alarilla as gold medal winners for Team Philippines. Torres pushed herself to the limits to extend her reign in women's long jump with a leap of 6.71 meters in the third of six attempts at the Jakabaring Sports City. She broke her own record of 6.68m she set in the 2009 Laos SEA Games. Indonesian Maria Londa claimed silver (6.47m) while newcomer Filipina Katherine Khay Santos settled for the bronze (6.25m). Over in Jakarta, Ortega, Alarilla and Lagman erased their frustrating world championships campaign in Russia after beating newly-crowned world titlist team Vietnam by a mere half point in a much in women's poomsae. Other fronts Other contributors to the cause of improving the country's fifth place finish last time in the 11-nation cast are mountain bike rider Joey Barba, the poomsae mixed pair of Vidal Marvin Gabriel and Shaneen Ched Sia, and Orencio James de los Santos. Defying West Java's slippery downhill 1.5-kilometer course, Barba (2:32.44) settled for the silver behind Indonesian Pornomo (2:31.45) while Gabriel and Sia pulled off a surprise runner up finish against their Vietnam opponents for Team Philippines' second silver. Young and promising, Gabriel also notched a bronze in men's singles poomsae, an identical result for De los Santos in karated-do's individual kata event. Filipino athletes in other disciplines also moved forward such as the men's badminton team, who are now in the quarterfinal round after whipping Myanmar, 3-1, the Blu Girls of softball after a 10-1 clobbering of Thailand and English billiards bet Luis Saberdo a 3-1 winner over Indonesian Adhi Brajafalachi. Swimmers Banjo Borja (400m IM and 200m breaststroke), Jose Joaquin Gonzales (400m IM), Jasmine Alkhaldi (200m freestyle) and Dhil Anderson Lee (50m butterfly) all qualified for the finals of their respective events Saturday night. Unlucky campaign Ageless Nathaniel "Tac" Padilla failed to defend his 25m standard pistol title and placed sixth while Jayson Valdez and Emerito Concepcion finished 11th and 12th, respectively in the 10m air rifle event also at the Jakabaring shooting range. The men's softball team suffered a 4-2 setback against Indonesia while Felix Taoro dropped a 3-0 decision against Myanmar's Nay Thway Oo of Myanmar in English billiards. Racquel Luzarez also did not figure in the medal race of karate-do's individual women's kata. — JVP, GMA News
