Envoy in Australia seeks help for young Pinoy with birth defect

The Philippine envoy to Australia sought the Filipino community's support for an eight-year-old Filipino boy who underwent surgery this month for having an "imperforate anus." According to a report of the Department of Foreign Affairs, Philippine ambassador to Australia Belen Anota informed the Filipino community about the case of Josh Puyo, who was born without a normal rectal opening. Anota met with some 70 Filipino community leaders, Philippine media representatives and guests during a breakfast reception hosted by Consul General Anne Jalando-on Louis at the Consulate in Sydney Nov. 5. Canberra Times reported that Puyo underwent a colostomy at the Canberra Hospital free of charge last Nov. 2. The report, quoting Australian National University medical school Associate Professor of paediatric surgery David Croaker, who performed two four-hour operations on the boy, said Puyo's "quality of life was affected by the stoma urinary tract infections." The doctor said Puyo might be able to return to the Philippines before Christmas. The colostomy became possible with the help of with Rotary Oceanic Medical Aid for Children, which assists children from developing countries afflicted with severe medical conditions. - VVP, GMA News
