Apple Siri 'jailbroken', Android port may be possible

One month after Apple Inc. unveiled Siri, the iPhone 4S’ voice-activated assistant, a French engineering firm claims to have jailbroken her – and allow her to run on rival OS Android. Applidium said it managed to crack Siri’s protocol and use her recognition engine “from any device," including non-iPhone 4S handsets like the iPad or even an Android device. “Today, we managed to crack open Siri’s protocol. As a result, we are able to use Siri’s recognition engine from any device. Yes, that means anyone could now write an Android app that uses the real Siri! Or use Siri on an iPad! And we’re going to share this know-how with you," it said on its website. It posted a recording of its engineers saying “autonomous demo of Siri" to test Siri’s speech-to-text feature. Applidium said its engineers managed to add their “root certificate" by setting up a custom SSL certification authority and adding it to the iPhone 4S. But a separate article on The Next Web noted the process would require the unique identifier of an iPhone 4S to use as a “calling card." “Some interesting details from the group include the fact that the protocol contains a ton of information, including the confidence level it has in every word’s translation and a timestamp for each word," it added. — TJD, GMA News
