Palace: Nov. 22 a special non-working holiday in Sultan Kudarat

Malacañang has declared November 22 a special non-working day in Sultan Kudarat to allow its residents to mark the province's 38th anniversary. The declaration was made via Proclamation No. 281 signed by Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr. last Oct. 27. "Sultan Kudarat was once a part of the former empire province of Cotabato. It was created as a separate province along with Maguindanao and North Cotabato on November 22, l973 by virtue of Presidential Decree No. 341 signed by former President Ferdinand E. Marcos," Malacañang said in a statement. The province's name Sultan Kudarat was derived from a Muslim ruler, the late Sultan Mohammed Dipatuan Kudarat. He asserted his leadership in 1619 and reigned over the Sultanate of Maguindanao from January 1625 to 1671. Present-day Sultan Kudarat is located in the southwestern part of the island of Mindanao. It is bounded on the north by its sister provinces of Maguindanao and Cotabato; on the south by the provinces of South Cotabato and Sarangani; on the east by Davao del Sur and on the west by Celebes Sea. — ELR, GMA News
