Lawyer, son killed in Cagayan de Oro car fire

A lawyer and his three-year-old son were killed in a fire inside their car in Cagayan de Oro City Saturday morning, a police report said. Cagayan de Oro police identified the victims as Rey Bennie Fabre, a lawyer, and his three-year-old son. An initial report said the incident happened at around 5 a.m. near the city's Neri Compound at Zone 2, Barangay Bayabas. According to Rachelle Reyna, a masseuse, she was fetched by Fabre's woman companion to massage the lawyer's two sons at home who had fever. Reyna said, the lawyer and his companions in the car decided to drop by a drugstore to buy medicines. But Fabre drove past a drugstore and continued to drive until they reached Barangay Bayabas where the car got stuck in the mud, Reyna said, adding that the lawyer seemed under the influence of liquor. She got off of the car and called for help. A moment later, she said she saw the car was already in flames. On the other hand, the police report said a certain Felix Trecio and Panfilo Valmoria rushed to help the victims and smashed open the left-side window of the car in an attempt to pull out Fabre’s son, but Fabre shot Valmoria three times. Police said Valmoria sustained a gunshot wound in the shoulder. Authorities recovered from Fabre’s car a 9mm handgun, a cal-.38 pistol, and bladed weapons, the report said. Investigations into the incident are still ongoing on, the police said. — Mariz Revales with Amanda Fernandez /LBG, GMA News
