Authorities order 5 QC slaughterhouses closed

With demand for meat due to spike as the holidays draw closer, authorities in Quezon City ordered the closure of five slaughterhouses due to lack of sanitation. The city veterinary office had the slaughterhouses closed after inspecting them, radio dzBB's Allan Gatus reported Wednesday. Of the five closed slaughterhouses, four were in the Kamuning district while one was along Ermin Garcia Street, the report said. Dr. Ana Maria Cabel of the city veterinarian's office cited initial reports indicating the five establishments also lacked the proper license. Each of the closed establishments can produce 500 to 600 kilos of meat daily, the report added. In the meantime, Cabel appealed to residents to be careful in buying meat, and to make sure the ones they purchase are not tainted. The city veterinarian's office is taking steps to make sure the meat consumed in the city is fit for human consumption especially as demand for meat is due to spike as the Christmas holidays draw closer. — LBG, GMA News
