Pacquiao to join Arroyo party for May elections

Filipino boxing champion Manny Pacquiao took a flight to Manila from General Santos City to be sworn in as a member of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's Kabalikat ng Mamamayang Pilipino (Kampi) party, dzBB radio reported Friday. The report said Pacquiao, the most popular athlete in the country, will join Kampi as its district chairman in his native General Santos City in the southern Philippines It was not immediately clear if he will run for city mayor under Kampi in the May 14 elections although Pacquaio earlier said he was "more than 90 percent" sure he would do so. He added his political plan will not interfere with his preparations for an upcoming bout. Earlier, Pacquiao met with local officials who are members of the ruling Lakas party. The officials had promised to back his mayoralty bid this May. -GMANews.TV
