(Update) SuperFerry stalls near Negros

Less than three weeks after one of its vessels stalled at sea, Aboitiz Transport Systems Corp. suffered another blow after the engine of its SuperFerry 9 conked out while the vessel was crossing Negros Island waters. Radio station dzBB reported that 492 passengers and crew were listed onboard. GMA News' Flash Report, however, reported that over 500 people were on the ship. The ship, which left Bacolod City en rouet to Iligan City in Mindanao, broke down southwest of Daog Point in Negros Island. Lieutenant Commander Joseph Coyme, spokesman for the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), said tugboats have been dispatched to bring the ferry to shore. SuperFerry 1 was pulling the SuperFerry 9 to Guimaras Island. No casualties were reported in the incident. Earlier, close to 1,000 people aboard the Palawan-bound Our Lady of Medjugorje were stranded after its lube oil pump broke. The incident happened on February 2 amid strong waves and winds. The PCG search and rescue ship BRP Pampanga was able to assist the passengers after 20 hours while the Medjugorje drifted towards the South China Sea. With the aid of the Aboitiz-owned SuperFerry 16, the Medjugorje was pulled to the Manila pier thus ending the passengers' 60-hour ordeal. - GMANews.TV
