GO bets, Loren lead in another election survey

Another nationwide survey showed that most voters would choose opposition senatorial candidates led by Loren Legarda. Results of the survey done by the Center for Issues and Advocacy showed that nearly seven of ten Filipinos would vote for Legarda in the May 14 elections. The survey also showed that voters would choose six senatorial bets from the Genuine Opposition, five from Team Unity and one from independent candidates. The survey was conducted from March 1 to 5 with 1,200 respondents. The center is a Philippine-based research group with Ed Malay as its director. News reports identified Malay as a publicist and media consultant of former President Fidel Ramos. It was the same survey firm that released the results of its exit poll in the 2004 elections that showed that then presidential candidate Fernado Poe Jr had overwhelmingly won in Metro Manila. The survey showed that aside from Legarda who got 68 percent of the votes, five other senatorial candidates from the Genuine Opposition (GO) and five from the administration’s Team Unity (TU) and one independent candidate made it to the Magic 12. Malay said the survey proved that Legarda remained the most popular senatorial candidate since she also topped two previous surveys by other groups. Legarda was top in the latest survey of the Ibon Foundation followed by opposition colleague Francis “Chiz" Escudero. She was only second to independent senatorial candidate Francis “Kiko" Pangilinan in the recent survey of the Social Weather Stations. He said Legarda’s lead over other candidates “can’t be overtaken by any other candidate. But I am not closing the doors for other candidates (who are at the 13th to 15th) to make it at the winning circle." The results of the survey presented to the media at the Manila Hotel on Monday were as follows: 1. Loren Legarda -GO -816 votes (68 percent); 2. Manuel Villar Jr-GO -696 votes (58 percent); 3. Francis Pangilinan-Ind.-672 votes (56 percent); 4. Ralph Recto - TU - and Panfilo Lacson –GO - 648 votes (54 percent);5. Francis Escudero –GO- 624 votes (52 percent); 6. Alan Peter Cayetano - GO -600 votes (50 percent); 7. Tito Sotto- TU - 564 votes (47 percent); 8. Edgardo Angara – TU -540 votes (45 percent); 9. Joker Arroyo – TU and Benigno Aquino III –GO - 456 votes (38 percent); 10. Mike Defensor –TU -444 votes (37 percent) Malay said that with 67 campaign days to go before elections, the rest of the senatorial aspirants from the 13th to 22nd positions would still have a chance of improving their current standing depending on their individual strategies. He said the survey also showed that the top eight senatorial bets appeared to be heading for sure victory and only the 9th to 12th place were up for competition in the coming elections. -GMANews.TV
