Bicol disaster units alerted for Bulusan

JUBAN, Sorsogon - Local disaster officials in Sorsogon and in neighboring town of Irosin placed on alert their respective disaster councils following another ash explosion from Mount Bulusan early morning Sunday. Mayor Maritess Guab-Fragata said they had alerted Barangay (village) Disaster Coordinating Councils with an instruction to immediately inform the Municipal Disaster Coordinating Council of any danger posed by the volcanic activity on residents. Juban has eight barangays covered in ash from Bulusan. Fragata, who was about to resume her campaign Sunday, said she had sent monitoring teams to the barangays of Puting-sapa, Rangas, Anog and Rangas, which are the most vulnerable areas. Irosin Mayor Lilia Gonzales, meanwhile, said no report yet of any serious damage or injury had reached her office as of posting time. Gonzales said BDCCs in affected barangays had already been alerted and assured that evacuation centers were ready should the need arise. "We are thankful that this explosion today (Sunday) had not caused any serious effect on our people, it seems," she told GMANEWS. TV. She, however, reiterated her appeal for help for residents who were in danger of being hit by possible mudflow. Gonzales said they had been pleading to the national government for assistance in relocating the residents whose shelters are along or near the river channel and the mudflow path but nothing had happen. "[President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo] even came here to Sorsogon some months ago when Bulusan's restiveness was at its peak but her words never materialized," the mayor said. Irosin town had seven barangays affected by the explosion Sunday. - GMANews.TV
