PNP officer killed in Masbate clash

A police officer was killed in an encounter with suspected communist rebels in a remote village in the central Philippine province of Masbate early Tuesday morning, a regional military spokesman said.
About 5 a.m., combined military and police elements engaged 100 New People's Army (NPA) rebels in Bugtong village in Mandaon town, resulting to the death of police Inspector Harold Gaces, said Lt. Col. Rhoderick Parayno, spokesman of the Armed Forces Southern Luzon Command (Solcom).
Casualties on the enemy side was undetermined although their were traces of blood seen on the escape route taken by the insurgents, Parayno said.
The body of Gaces was retrieved about 9 a.m. and later brought to Mandaon town proper for post-mortem examination and proper disposition.
Troops have since launched pursuit operations against the rebels. - GMANewsTV
