How did Julia die? Bag, crowbar, pants tell story

The victim's native Ifugao bag allegedly worn by the suspected killer. A bloodstained wooden pestle that could have been used in beating the victim to death. A crowbar that could have been used in digging the victim’s grave. Two pairs of denim pants soiled with blood. The victim’s hat and umbrella found in the suspect's house. The victim’s digital camera containing photos that could give more clues to her death. Thus far, these are some of the pieces of circumstantial evidence that investigators are putting together to unlock the mystery behind the killing of 40-year-old US Peace Corps volunteer Julia Campbell, radio dzBB reported on Tuesday. DzBB gathered the information from Supt. Joseph Adnol, Cordillera police chief information officer. The report said police investigators are looking at the angle that not only suspect Juan Duntugan perpetrated the crime because a second pair of pants stained with blood was found in his house when the police conducted a raid through a search warrant. The report said about three to four individuals could be behind the crime that left Campbell buried in a shallow grave at Batad village in Banaue, Ifugao. Duntugan allegedly asked her mother to hide the second pair of pants. The mother meanwhile tried to hide the pants in a neighbor's house. The police said Campbell’s hat and umbrella were also found inside Duntugan's house. Philippine National Police chief Director General Oscar Calderon said on Tuesday that Campbell died after fighting off her attackers. "We saw indications that Julia fought back. She was athletic and offered stiff resistance. There was an injury on her shoulder, which indicates that she was hit with a blunt object. But she likely lost consciousness when she was hit on the head with the object," Calderon said in an interview on dzRH radio Duntugan continues to go scot free. DzBB said the police have not yet filed a case against the 25-year-old woodcarver so that he could be arrested. The motive for the killing has yet to be established. Campbell, who went hiking at the mountains of Banaue, dropped by Duntugan’s store at Batad village for a refreshment. According to investigators, the store looked like one of the best refreshment areas in the village. They said the Duntugan family was living a life of relative comfort and thus, would not be desperate to commit the crime of robbery. The report said Grace Duntugan, Juan’s wife, is not in the area anymore. She left their house in Ifugao. The Duntugan couple's three children were left to their grandmother's care. - GMANews.TV
