Reds wipe out 7-man Army team in Abra


BAGUIO CITY – Communist rebels wiped out an Army seven-man team in an attack in the remote town of Boliney in Abra province early Wednesday morning. Senior Inspector Dennis Agno of the Regional Police Mobile Group said Lieutenant Mark Evan Onrubia and the rest of his seven-man team from the Army’s 41st Infantry Battalion, based in Manabo town, were killed when about 100 New People’s Army rebels attacked them at about 6:30 a.m. in Barangay (village) Amtuagan, Boliney. Agno said Onrubia and his men were deployed in the area as route security of election results paraphernalia from polling areas to the town center. He said all seven soldiers died on the scene of the attack. Apart from the slain officer, authorities have not yet identified the other casualties. Agno added that government reinforcements sent to the are still battling the NPA rebels as of press time. Earlier, the NPA’s Chadli Molintas Command that operates in the Cordillera and Ilocos Regions vowed more attacks supposedly to frustrate the military from rigging the results of the May 14 elections in favor of administration-backed candidates. On May 13, three soliders died in an ambush in Bontoc town in the Mountain Province that borders Abra. -GMANews.TV
