DOJ discounts appeal on dismissed rebellion case

"Bayaan mo na siya (Let it go)." On this note, Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez said Friday evening he is not keen on appealing the Supreme Court ruling junking a rebellion case against six militant lawmakers. While Gonzalez said he disagrees with the high court’s decision, he steered clear of a verbal war, merely saying it is "useless to appeal." "Hindi na (No more). It’s useless to appeal ... Bayaan mo na siya (Let it go)," he said in an interview on dzBB radio, when asked if the DOJ will appeal the decision. "Whether we will disagree or not yan pa rin. Wala tayong magagawa riyan (Whether we will disagree with it or not, it will remain the same. We can’t do anything about it)," he added. But Gonzalez cried foul over the high court’s rebuke that he was meddling in the affairs of politics, saying what the DOJ did was merely process criminal cases involving the six. He made references to the murder charges against Rep. Satur Ocampo, who was arrested earlier this year over murder charges stemming from a criminal complaint filed in Leyte in the 1980s. "Every case that is criminal will pass through DOJ. Paano mo sasabihing may political motivation from the beginning? May nag-file ng kaso sa Leyte di ko alam nag-file doon pano mo masasabing may political motivation (Every case that is criminal will pass through DOJ. How can you say from the beginning that it is politically motivated)?" he said. In Quezon City, meanwhile, dzBB reported that supporters of another member of the Batasan 6, Crispin Beltran, gathered near the Philippine Heart Center to celebrate his "victory." Members of the Free Ka Bel Movement, Kilusang Mayo Uno and Pinagkaisang Samahan ng Tsuper at Operator Nationwide (Piston) expected to hold a mass in the area. Beltran’s lawyer Romeo Capulong, for his part, was reported to be working out legal arrangements for Beltran’s release after more than a year in "hospital arrest." - GMANews.TV
