Police discovered early Wednesday morning an abandoned car carrying explosives in the province of South Cotabato, dzXL radio said.

Based on initial investigation, the car, a black 1997 Toyota Corolla sedan, was discovered abandoned in the town of Surallah at 4:30 a.m.

The report also said the provincial police have been staking out the area for several days and had installed several checkpoints after reports reached them of car bomb threats.

Police director Senior Superintendent Robert Kiunisala said that the suspects who had planted the bombs may be targeting the cities of Koronadal and General Santos City in South Cotabato and Takurong in Sultan Kudarat.

While police are still uncertain as to the type of explosive the car was carrying, they said the vehicle might have come from Maguindanao.

A special unit has already been deployed to defuse the explosive.

Surallah is a first class municipality in South Cotabato and has a population of 66, 208 (13,364 households). - Mark Meruenas, GMANews.TV
