Communist rebels torch Globe cell site in Iloilo

At least one security guard was injured as suspected communist rebels torched a communications tower of Globe Telecoms in Iloilo province Sunday night. Radio station dzBB reported Monday that the incident took place at the cell site at Ambariol village in Tubungan town in Iloilo province. It said Capt. Lowen Marquez, head of the military civil relations service for Western Visayas, claimed that the New People's Army (NPA) burned the cell sites after disarming the guards. Marquez claimed that the NPAs threw dynamite sticks at the sites, then took the wallets and cell phones of the personnel at the facility. The NPAs even punched at least one of the security guards before fleeing, Marquez said. The guard was not immediately identified, however. He said NPAs had already staged a similar attack in the area in 2004. Tubungan is a fifth-class town in Iloilo, with a population of 19,007 people in 3,744 households. - GMANews.TV
