Passport applicants in Zamboanga City have been required to undergo pre-employment orientation seminar so they can be warned and guided against exploitation and abuse even before they leave to work overseas.
Administrator Rosalinda Baldoz of the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) said Friday the POES requisite for passport applicants intending to work abroad is one of the important features of the government’s campaign against illegal recruitment.
Baldoz said the POEA and Department of Foreign Affairs in Region have designed the seminar in such a way that prospective overseas Filipino workers would be provided information on how to avoid illegal recruitment, the labor and employment condition in several countries of destination, and the realities of working in another country.
“The POEA is widening its network of partners in the implementation of the PEOS program, getting the support of various national agencies, local government units, industry associations, and professional groups," she said.
The Philippine Nurses Association is also requiring its members to attend PEOS prior to their registration, Baldoz cited.
The PEOS program is a strategy of the government to protect workers from exploitation and abuse by unscrupulous recruiters and employers.
“It is important that the applicants are properly informed and guided even before they make any decision on working overseas", Baldoz stressed. - GMANews.TV
