Costly medicine, North Korea, and illegal construction

During Foreign Secretary Alberto Romulo’s visit, GMA-7 – through reporter Lei Alvis and her team – was the only Philippine TV station allowed to enter and shoot footage in the hermetic, communist country. North Korea may be a throwback communist country but it continues to make waves in the international community, with United Nations inspectors again given passage to check its facilities toward ending the country’s nuclear weapons program. Alvis reports on the country that makes world headlines and to check on the eight Filipinos who happen to work in North Korea. Illegal construction JP Soriano The building of a spa resort atop Taal Volcano in Batangas province drew stern criticism when it was revealed to the public. The area, after all, falls within the permanent danger zone set by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). The Department of Tourism, too, has not given its endorsement. And the Department of Environment and Natural Resources has since suspended the permit it gave the Korean company to build the facility. But the Taal spa resort isn’t the only such controversial project. In Baguio City, buildings have been put up in a nature reserve, a heritage site, or areas deemed hazardous. Mula sa generic drugs hanggang sa mga gamot na may tatak, tila isang krus na pasan ang nagtataasang presyo ng mga gamot. Ang malungkot, ang ilang pasyenteng sa gamot iniaasa ang buhay, mistulang wala nang magawa kundi ang mamaluktot. Isang batas ang muling nakabinbin sa Kongreso - ang Cheap Medicines Bill, batas na sana'y magpapababa sa presyo ng mga gamot sa bansa. Tradisyunal at makaluma ang bansang North Korea. Pero sa kabila nito, naging maingay at kontrobersyal ang bansa sa buong daigdig. Kamakailan, pinasok ng mga miyembro ng United Nations ang North Korea para disarmahan ito ng nuclear weapons na sinasabing pagmamay-ari nito. Sa Baguio City, may mga nakatayong gusali sa mga nature reserve, heritage site, o hazardous areas, mga katangiang dapat ay nagbabawal sa anumang uri ng konstruksyon. Wala bang kakayahan ang mga otoridad para ipatupad ang mga pagbabawal ng pagpapatayo ng mga istruktura sa mga sensitibong lugar?
